Has anyone else developed a recent adoration for Anne Hathaway?

Firstly, she gave a totally badass performance as Catwoman in what was otherwise a relatively disappointing Batman film. She completely stole the show.

Secondly, as her voice has gained more prominence within the media, it has become clear how awesome she is off screen as well as on.

In reference to a situation in which Hathaway inadvertently flashed photographers as she stepped out of her car, she responded to an interviewer’s creepy proclamation that he had ‘seen a lot of her recently’ brilliantly. She managed to deflect any attempt to embarrass her, and get back on topic to talk about her (wonderful) performance in Les Miserables.

Despite constant questioning from the media, she has also refused to reveal the extreme diet that she had to follow for her role as Fantine. Instead, she stressed that she lost weight in an unhealthy way in order to portray a character who is close to death, as she did not want to encourage any copycat diets.

She has now been awarded with an Oscar for her heartfelt performance in Les Miserables, and in her acceptance speech she linked the hardships of Fantine to the suffering of women within contemporary society, calling for an end to violence against women;
“Here’s hoping that someday in the not too distant future, the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories and never more in real life.”

Anne Hathaway is a brilliant actress, a strong woman with respectable and thought provoking opinions, and, from my point of view, a fantastic role model.

Photo

Photo

Photo

Photo

"Violence on the creative nature of man cannot last forever"

“Violence on the creative nature of man cannot last forever”

- Maria Alyokhina, Pussy Riot

Photo

Photo

Words and Guitar

- my favourite releases of 2012

I did write a top 10 albums of 2012 a couple of months ago, but I didn’t think anyone would be interested in reading it. This is an adaptation of something that I wrote for a feminist zine, so there is a particular focus on the women who were making noise last year (and I could have included more, but this fitted nicely over two pages!). The list is in no particular order.

rolo tomassi ‘astrea’
for those who like their music heavy! eva’s gut wrenching growls and screams (and lovely singing, in places) are layered over some intense technical mathcore. this is rolo tomassi’s third album, and shows a real sense of maturity and progression. ‘astrea’ also marks a new chapter for the band in that they have gained two new members, and this release proves that they all gel together brilliantly, and seems to have resulted in a fuller sound. a truly stunning album.
listen to ‘howl’ here

goat ‘world music’
i think i read somewhere that goat called this album ‘world music’ ‘because that’s what it is.’ so there you go. all of the different musical styles and instruments provide layers of brilliance on each of the tracks, but although no one could dispute the quality of their music, i think that it is its combination with the vocals that really seals the deal and draw me into this album. i love the moments of rawness when the (unnamed) woman’s voice cracks, especially when it’s juxtaposed with the upbeat music behind it.
check out ‘let it bleed’ here

black moth ‘the killing jar’
black moth’s awesome and rifftastic first album falls at the more accessible end of the spectrum of sludge/stoner rock. i’m kinda bored of hearing lazy comparisons between harriet’s vocals to people like pj harvey (because, of course, ALL women sound like pj harvey). but i read a musical comparison on sludgelord that totally works; black moth are like melissa auf der maur meets fu manchu. rad!
watch the video for ‘blackbirds fall’ here

la sera ‘sees the light’
la sera is katy goodman aka kickball katy of vivian girls fame. she has ditched the 60s garage sounds of the viv girlz, delivering a really well made pop album that still has a unique charm to it. it’s impossible not to fall in love with katy and her sweet sounding voice, and as she croons ‘break my heeeart’ you just have to scream HOW COULD YOU?!
check out ‘break my heart’ here

white lung ‘sorry’
i love white lung! this album takes them more towards the melodic side of the punk spectrum, but go see them live to experience the persisting raw intensity of their sound. i think when you watch them and witness their stage presence it’s also easier to see that they have been influenced by riot grrrl bands of the 90s, and of course this is also evident from some of the feminist sensibilities in mish’s lyrics. punk rock feminism rules, ok?
watch them rocking ‘thick lip’ here

the men ‘open your heart’
contrary to the band’s name, they are not entirely comprised of men… there were two female members back in the day, and although i cannot keep track of their line up changes, i know that there is at least one woman on this album! ‘open your heart’ is great and varied; at different points you can draw comparisons with the bronx, fucked up and pissed jeans, but as if they’ve had a garage/indie rock makeover.
listen to ‘animal’ here

post war glamour girls ‘tragic loss; he had such a lovely house’
this is the debut ep from another band with a misleading name (one female member). in only four tracks, pwgg impressively manage to capture the variety and breadth of their sound, which cannot be pigeon holed. influences such as modest mouse and the fall are evident, and lead vocals reminiscent of waits/cave are complimented by alice’s sweet and enticing whispers. the ep is extremely well executed, with no attention to detail spared. i would thoroughly recommend catching them live, and seeing them let loose…
watch the video for ‘tremor’ here

sauna youth ‘dreamlands’
sauna youth are a cool DIY garage punk band with what i would describe as a specifically british charm. they write super catchy songs about things like going to the supermarket. despite lyrics which exude boredom and dissatisfaction, they have somehow managed to make an album that is really fun to listen to.
no youtube videos, so you’ll just have to check out the whole album here (not a bad thing)

Want to help out the queer community in Uganda?

Want to help out the queer community in Uganda?:
pandaseal:

A program led by Reverend Mark Kiyimba, from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Uganda. Any money you donate goes to Ugandans to improve Uganda, not white saviors or colonialists. This project is to create a queer space that provides internet connections, giving a voice to marginalized people. More information can be found at the link.

The Reverend is a leader in the LGBT movement in Uganda, and currently runs a school and orphanage near Masaka. If you can’t give, please boost at least. This is an expensive project and he has told me that it will take much effort. Thank you.

It says something that this has far less notes than posts that paint Africans as especially homophobic.
